Ethiopia , anyone been?
Stab in the dark I know but I never have any work in January so usually bugger off for 2/3 weeks.

Fancy doing something a bit different rather than sit on a beach somewhere and I like the look of the churches that are carved into the rocks .

Didn't seem to expensive either for hotels , travel food etc .

Open to other ideas but not Thailand .

Budget is about 2k including flights.

SPLATT .

Have a read of the article that Coffee put up - that sums it up.

From memory, I really liked it all. I forgot that we went to Axum too, but there wasn't much there other than the obelisks. Gondar is interesting - the castles really shouldn't be there. Bahir Dar is more relaxed although there's less to see when compared to Lalibela/Gondar. Harar is really, really interesting - incredibly Muslim in a very Christian country, and every bugger there is sitting about getting high on qat. Liked Addis too.

It's hard work - the bus rides are long, the people are a hassle, they use a weird clock that drives you barmy, it's dusty and dirty - but it's well worth it.

Oh, and they think it's 2010.

As Coffee said, I've been - went to Addis, Lalibela, Bahir Dar, Gondar, and Harar. Absolutely loved it - it's one of the most beautiful and interesting places I've ever been to. The countryside is spectacular - definitely travel by bus because it'd be criminal to miss the landscapes. Greenest place I've ever seen, too. The food is brilliant.

The people were a bit of a disappointment. I worked with an Ethiopian girl before I went and had high expectations, but they were pretty annoying - the begging was something else. We even had a chap in a suit come up to us with his hand out in Addis. Later in our trip a Kenyan said it was because they'd never been colonised.

I'd highly recommend it!

Yep, been to Addis. Loved it. The countryside must be amazing, next time I’m going out of the city.

Years ago I found a Lonely Planet guide to Ethiopia in the street and it looks really interesting. I never made it there, but could still be tempted.

I think some people are put off by memories of the war and famine from the 1980s, but that is long over.

Why go all that way.
Go to East Ham you'll meet every nation you can think of there.

If you don’t go to Ethiopia, Oman is probably my favourite place in the world. The friendliest people you’ll ever meet and majestic desert mountains that look like something out of the Old Testament.

I love travelling and love South East Asia. Never been too worried about visiting Africa but had to go to Ethiopia for a week on work. I left gutted I couldn't stay longer. Definitely a place I want to go back to. Easy flight via Dubai.

Drink weird and wonderful cocktails and try different food mostly.

Few temples and stuff to see .

I've just realised I've never seen H&P and David Byrne in a room at the same time.
